The 2026 Oscars delivered another milestone moment for Brazilian cinema on Sunday night as Wagner Moura took the stage as one of the presenters of the Academy’s newest category: Best Casting. The Brazilian actor’s presence highlighted the country’s growing influence in the global film industry.
A Historic Appearance on Hollywood’s Biggest Stage
Moura shared the stage with Paul Mescal, Chase Infiniti, Delroy Lindo, and Gwyneth Paltrow, each representing one of the nominated films. During his remarks, he paid tribute to Gabriel Domingues, the casting director of O Agente Secreto, the Brazilian film competing in the category.
Despite the strong showing, the award for Best Casting went to Uma Batalha Após a Outra.
Moura was also nominated for Best Actor, but the Oscar went to Michael B. Jordan for his performance in Sinner.
Brazil Arrives With Multiple Nominations
Kleber Mendonça Filho’s O Agente Secreto entered the ceremony with four major nominations:
Best Picture
Best International Feature
Best Casting
Best Actor (Wagner Moura)
Brazil was also represented in the technical categories. Cinematographer Adolpho Veloso made history as the first Brazilian ever nominated for Best Cinematography, for his work on Sonhos de Trem. The award ultimately went to Autumn Durald Arkapaw, also for Pecadores.
A Night Without Statuettes, but Full of Recognition
Even without taking home an Oscar, the night was marked by pride and visibility for Brazilian filmmaking. Moura emphasized that sentiment after the ceremony:
“Brazilian cinema is standing among giants. Being here, being seen, being nominated—this is already a victory for all of us.”
The 2026 ceremony reinforced what industry analysts have noted for years: Brazil’s film industry is expanding its global footprint, producing stories and talent that resonate far beyond its borders.
