The Trump administration has begun issuing additional payments to millions of Americans enrolled in government‑backed health plans, including Medicare and Affordable Care Act marketplace coverage. The first deposits and checks are already being sent out nationwide.
Roughly 20 million seniors will receive a $90 payment to help offset Medicare costs. The money comes from a reserve fund established by Congress in 2008 to stabilize the program’s finances. Medicare currently covers about 64 million people across the country, including more than 5 million residents in Florida, according to federal data.
Not everyone qualifies for the extra payment. Seniors whose premiums are already covered by Medicaid, as well as higher‑income beneficiaries who pay an additional surcharge, are excluded.
Most recipients will get the $90 through direct deposit, while others will receive a paper check by mail.
Nearly one million Americans enrolled in Obamacare plans will also receive additional support. Individuals who purchased coverage through Healthcare.gov, paid the full premium, and did not receive subsidies will be issued $500 checks. Those payments began rolling out this week to beneficiaries in 30 states, including Florida.
The timing is notable: both payments are arriving shortly before Open Enrollment, the annual period when Americans can sign up for or change their 2027 health‑insurance plans. Enrollment begins November 1.
