A Texas mother has given birth to identical quadruplets after a rare failure of an IUD, one of the most effective forms of contraception. The case surprised both the family and medical teams in Corpus Christi and has drawn national attention.

Adriana Luna, a nursing student from Corpus Christi, discovered she was expecting an extremely rare pregnancy: four genetically identical girls, despite having an IUD in place. She already had a two‑year‑old son and was not planning to expand her family, but the unusual medical event changed everything.

According to specialists at Yale Medicine, identical quadruplets occur when a single fertilized egg splits into four — something extraordinarily uncommon. When this happens while an IUD is inserted, the odds are even lower and the pregnancy carries additional risks for both the mother and the babies.

The four girls — Amora, Analia, Arya, and A’Zura — were born prematurely at 29 weeks at Corpus Christi Medical Center. Two have already been discharged, while the other two remain in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Their father, Anthony Lerma, who is himself a twin, said he initially thought the news was a joke. Facing the financial challenges of caring for four newborns, the family launched an online fundraiser that has already collected more than $6,000 to support their new routine.
