New U.S. Census data shows Portuguese now ranks 4th in the state, reshaping local culture, services, and business
The Brazilian presence in the United States continues to grow — and now there’s a new indicator of that influence: the Portuguese language.
According to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Portuguese is now the 4th most spoken language in Florida, behind only English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. The shift is noticeable in everyday life, with more Portuguese being heard in restaurants, parks, stores, and supermarkets across the state.
In Florida, about 139,000 people speak Portuguese at home — more than French, German, or Italian, languages that have long had a historical footprint in the U.S. The growth reflects the size of the Brazilian community, which now includes over 500,000 residents nationwide, according to official figures.
Portuguese is also shaping local services. The language is increasingly present in bilingual schools, churches, medical clinics, law offices, and even public‑service departments. And the trend isn’t limited to Florida — in several other states, Portuguese ranks among the top three most spoken languages.
In some northern regions, residents say it’s possible to handle nearly everything — from grocery shopping to dentist appointments — entirely in Portuguese.
The rise isn’t only among native speakers. More Americans are choosing to learn Portuguese for work, tourism, business opportunities, or personal relationships. Spoken by more than 260 million people worldwide, the language is gaining momentum in the U.S. as the Brazilian community expands.
Experts say the impact goes far beyond communication. The spread of Portuguese drives business, creates jobs, and keeps Brazilian culture alive across one of the most diverse countries in the world.
