The Orlando Executive Airport is preparing for a rare scene on April 4: its runway will close to aircraft and open to runners. The ORL 5K on the Runway is returning with a mission that blends sport, community impact, and a passion for aviation.
The event brings together professional athletes, families, aviation enthusiasts, and supporters from across Central Florida. Those unable to attend in person can also join through a virtual race option, allowing participants nationwide to contribute.
A Runway With a Purpose
While the experience of running on an active airport runway is a major draw, organizers say the heart of the event is its social impact. All proceeds will support three aviation‑based nonprofit organizations focused on medical care, education, and youth opportunity.
Angel Flight Southeast: Medical Flights for Families in Need
One of the beneficiaries is Angel Flight Southeast, a volunteer‑pilot network that provides free air transportation for children and adults who must travel long distances for critical medical treatment.
The organization operates through donated aircraft, volunteer pilots, and families who rely on aviation when time and distance become barriers to care.
Vision of Flight: Inspiring the Next Generation
The race also supports Vision of Flight, a program that introduces students ages 10 to 18 to aviation careers. Through hands‑on activities, mentorship, and exposure to real aircraft, the organization helps young people—especially those from underserved communities—discover pathways into aerospace fields.
Orlando Youth Aviation Center: Training Future Pilots
The third beneficiary, the Orlando Youth Aviation Center, offers practical aviation education for teens ages 12 to 17.
The program runs three times a year and includes lessons on flight fundamentals, navigation, airport operations, and aviation careers. It concludes with an introductory flight experience, often the moment that turns curiosity into ambition.
A Community Event With Lasting Impact
Together, these initiatives show how every step on the runway supports compassion, education, and the future of aviation. The ORL 5K on the Runway is now open for registration at RunSignUp.com, with organizers expecting strong turnout from across Central Florida.
