New Rule Lets Dual Citizens Enter Brazil Without a Brazilian Passport

A new policy from Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is set to make life easier for thousands of dual citizens who travel frequently between Brazil and the United States. Effective immediately, Brazilian nationals who also hold another citizenship are no longer required to present their Brazilian passport when entering Brazil. Instead, they may enter the country using their foreign passport, as long as it carries a valid Brazilian visa.

The change eliminates a long‑standing requirement that forced dual citizens to show their Brazilian passport upon arrival. Now, travelers can simply use the passport of their second nationality to apply for a Brazilian visa — including the electronic version, the e‑Visa. For Americans, the fee is US$ 80.90, roughly R$ 415.

The update is particularly helpful for Brazilians whose national passport has expired or is currently being renewed, as well as for children of Brazilian citizens who travel using a foreign passport. Still, authorities emphasize that travelers must pay close attention to the rules governing their stay. Anyone entering Brazil as a foreigner is subject to the time limits of the visa. Overstaying can result in fines and additional measures by the Federal Police.

For minors under 18, the Federal Police may still require travel authorization if a child leaves Brazil without one of the parents.

Officials also recommend keeping Brazilian documentation up to date to avoid delays or complications during entry or exit. They warn that using the e‑Visa as a temporary workaround may lead to extra requirements from airlines or immigration authorities, and consulates will not be responsible for issues arising from those situations.
