Microsoft Ordered to Restore Hacked Xbox Account in Brazil

A Brazilian court has ruled against Microsoft after a gamer’s Xbox account was hacked and customer support told him he would need to repurchase all of his games. The judge ordered the company to restore the account, return the full digital library, and pay about $400 in compensation.

The gamer, known online as “Ordo_Liberal,” said his account was compromised even though he had two‑factor authentication enabled. Microsoft detected the unauthorized access, locked the account, and concluded that the security information had been altered.

When the player tried to regain access, Microsoft’s support team reportedly said the block was permanent, meaning he would lose all digital purchases unless he bought them again. He then filed a claim in Brazil’s Special Civil Court, where — under the country’s Consumer Defense Code — users can pursue cases like this without hiring a lawyer or paying court fees.

The ruling gives Microsoft 15 days to return the account. If the company fails to comply, the fine increases by 10%.

Digital‑rights attorney Fernando Peres explains that the case raises a broader concern: a Microsoft account doesn’t just store Xbox games — it also holds Windows licenses, apps, and digital purchases, meaning a suspension can disrupt a user’s entire digital life.

In the United States, the legal interpretation is different. Courts often treat digital games as revocable licenses, which platforms can remove at any time. In Brazil, however, consumer‑protection laws offer stronger safeguards when a service fails to function properly.

Microsoft has not yet commented on the decision.
