Maintaining a balanced diet is important year‑round, but during the summer — especially one as hot as 2026 — the need becomes even greater. With temperatures climbing above 118°F (48°C) in several states, specialists say children should have three balanced meals and two healthy snacks a day to manage hunger, maintain energy and avoid the effects of extreme heat.

Forecasts indicate that 2026 could be one of the hottest summers in U.S. history, increasing the risk of dehydration. Poor nutrition during heat waves can lead to dizziness, irritability, low blood pressure and even fainting. According to the CDC, pediatric dehydration cases in the United States have risen 30% compared to the same period last year.

Between meals, balanced snacks help control hunger and keep the body hydrated. Nutritionists recommend combining proteins, fiber and foods rich in water. Options include watermelon, grapes, oranges, cucumbers, natural yogurt and nuts.

Another tip is involving children in preparing their meals and keeping fruit portions pre‑cut to make healthy choices easier during busy routines.
