Attention immigrant workers and employers across the United States: the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced significant changes to the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) renewal process. Starting October 30, 2025, automatic extensions for most EAD categories will be discontinued.

Until now, many EAD holders were allowed to continue working while their renewal applications were pending, thanks to automatic extensions. DHS says the new policy aims to strengthen eligibility verification and prevent fraud.

The impact could be widespread. According to USAFacts, more than 32 million foreign-born individuals are part of the U.S. workforce — nearly 19% of all workers. Many families and businesses rely on valid EADs to maintain employment and operations.

Experts advise renewing EADs well in advance — ideally up to 180 days before expiration — to avoid gaps in work authorization. Without timely renewal, workers risk losing their legal ability to work.

There are exceptions. Individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and certain other categories may still qualify for automatic extensions. DHS urges all applicants to check their specific eligibility.

If your EAD is nearing expiration, treat this update as a warning. Renew early, keep documentation organized, and consult an immigration attorney if you have questions. Staying informed and prepared can help avoid serious disruptions.
