A group of eight Brazilian students has achieved a milestone that places Brazil firmly on the global map of youth innovation in aerospace. Competing in one of the world’s most demanding international engineering challenges, the Astrabrazil team secured a gold medal at the 2026 edition of the International Space Settlement Design Competition — an event backed by major institutions in the space sector and hosted at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

Their winning concept was as daring as it was technically ambitious: a self‑sustaining floating colony in the atmosphere of Venus. Instead of relying on supplies from Earth, the proposed settlement would operate as an autonomous industrial ecosystem. An automated system, powered by artificial intelligence, would harvest phosphine, a gas present on Venus, and convert it into essential materials such as structural components and technological parts. In practice, the colony would function like a fully independent factory capable of producing what it needs to grow and survive far from Earth.

During the final stage of the competition, the Brazilian students joined peers from South Africa, China, England and several other countries. Together, they faced a high‑pressure challenge: designing, in just 48 hours, the complete infrastructure for a future space‑tourism operation — including spacecraft, living environments, operational systems and cost projections. The 2026 edition brought together around 240 students, with 60 participants ultimately recognized for outstanding performance.

For the Astrabrazil team, the victory carries symbolic weight. It demonstrates that young Brazilian talent can compete — and win — in one of the most strategic and rapidly evolving fields in the world: space exploration. Beyond the medal, the students describe the experience as a rare opportunity to test ideas, collaborate with international teams and push the boundaries of what future generations can build.

As one of the team members put it, the achievement represents “much more than a prize — it’s proof that our ideas can reach places we never imagined.”
