Brazilian Pianist, 12, Shines in U.S. Competition
Gustavo Guitte earns Brazil’s first podium at the Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition with a bold, technically demanding performance

At just 12 years old, Brazilian pianist Gustavo Guitte decided to take a risk worthy of a seasoned musician: performing an entirely Brazilian repertoire before an international jury. His courage — paired with remarkable technical maturity — turned his audition into a historic achievement.
Gustavo competed in the finals of the Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition in the United States with two challenging works: “Nazarethiana,” by Pernambuco‑born composer Marlos Nobre, and “Paulistana No. 4,” by Amazonian maestro Cláudio Santoro. The choice showcased not only his skill, but also a deep artistic understanding unusual for someone his age.
His performance earned Brazil its first podium finish in the competition’s history. Gustavo, who is from Sorocaba, São Paulo, won third place in the “Modern & Beyond” category — a division contested by young pianists from China, South Korea, Ukraine, Canada, and the United States, countries known for producing classical‑music powerhouses.
The auditions took place at the Studio Theater in Virginia, and the awards ceremony was held at the prestigious The Palladium. Gustavo reached the finals after winning a Latin American regional selection, where only five students were chosen from more than 300 applicants.
By finishing among the top three, Gustavo proved that Brazilian music — rich, complex, and deeply expressive — belongs on the world’s most respected classical stages.
His teacher says the achievement reflects not only talent, but discipline, identity, and pride in representing Brazil through its own musical heritage.
