Ricardo Piquet, director‑general of Brazil’s Institute for Development and Management (IDG) and the executive leading Rio de Janeiro’s Museum of Tomorrow, has been selected to receive the Science Museum Group Fellowship, the highest distinction granted by the United Kingdom’s largest network of science museums.
Recognition From the UK’s Premier Science Institution
According to the letter sent by the British institution, the fellowship honors Piquet’s international contribution to science, innovation, and public communication of scientific knowledge. The Science Museum Group highlighted his leadership at the Museum of Tomorrow and his role in advancing global conversations on sustainability and climate change, areas in which the museum has become a reference point.
The group also emphasized the more than decade‑long partnership between the Museum of Tomorrow and the Science Museum Group, a collaboration that has included exhibitions, research exchanges, and joint educational initiatives.
A Career Built on Cultural Innovation
Piquet’s work at IDG extends beyond the Museum of Tomorrow. Under his leadership, the organization has managed major cultural institutions across Brazil, including the Paço do Frevo, Museu das Favelas, Museu das Amazônias, and the Jardim Botânico Museum. His nomination as Fellow recognizes what the Science Museum Group described as a model of “governance, innovation, and future‑oriented cultural leadership” developed in Brazil.
He is also the first Brazilian to join the select group of Science Museum Group Fellows, a milestone celebrated by the IDG as a validation of Brazil’s growing influence in global cultural and scientific dialogue.
Fellowship Ceremony Scheduled for May
Created in 2009, the Science Museum Group Fellowship honors researchers, communicators, and leaders who have expanded the social impact of science in the UK and worldwide. The 2026 fellowship will be formally awarded to Piquet on May 13, during the Science Museum’s annual gala dinner in London.
As the Museum of Tomorrow continues to shape international conversations on climate, sustainability, and the future of cities, Piquet’s recognition signals a broader acknowledgment of Brazil’s role in global scientific engagement.
