Brazilian Company Wins Earthshot Prize with Ambitious Forest Restoration Project
WORLD

In a historic moment for environmental innovation, Brazilian startup re.green was awarded the 2025 Earthshot Prize in the category “Protect and Restore Nature.” The announcement was made during the first-ever Earthshot Prize ceremony held in Latin America, at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro. The event brought together global leaders, environmental innovators, artists, and the award’s founder, Prince William, who opened the night with a warm “boa noite” in Portuguese.
Often referred to as the “Oscars of Sustainability,” the Earthshot Prize recognizes groundbreaking solutions to the planet’s most urgent environmental challenges. Re.green stood out among 2,500 nominees from 72 countries, surpassing finalists from Sweden and even Brazil’s own government-backed Tropical Forests Forever Fund. The company received £1 million (approximately R$ 7 million) to scale its work.
Headquartered in Rio, re.green uses artificial intelligence, satellite imagery, and ecological data to identify and restore degraded lands across the Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes. The project not only revives native ecosystems but also supports local communities and promotes biodiversity. “We hope our work can serve as a blueprint for large-scale regeneration worldwide,” said CEO Thiago Picolo. The recognition reinforces Brazil’s leadership in climate action and highlights the country’s potential to drive global environmental solutions.
