Brazilian athlete Mara Flávia Araújo, 38, died on Saturday during the first stage of Ironman Texas, in the swimming portion of the race.
According to local media, she went missing in the low‑visibility waters of Lake Woodlands, near Houston. Rescue teams were called immediately and located her about an hour later at a depth of roughly three meters.
Mara Flávia was a journalist, influencer, and high‑performance athlete whose story of overcoming challenges inspired thousands. She began her career in communications as a teenager and later turned to sports as a way to rebuild her life after health issues. In 2018, she became a triathlete and started competing in elite endurance events.
She had more than 60,000 followers on social media, where she encouraged healthy routines and shared her training journey. Her accomplishments included a third‑place finish at the Brasília Triathlon, two GP Brasil titles, and two qualifications for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.
In Texas, she was competing in the full‑distance Ironman — more than 220 kilometers combining swimming, cycling, and running.
The Ironman organization expressed condolences to her family and said it is cooperating with authorities. The case is being investigated by officials in Montgomery County.
