Brazil and the United States announced a new cooperative initiative aimed at strengthening the fight against transnational organized crime, according to Brazil’s Finance Minister Dario Durigan. The partnership will integrate efforts between Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The agreement, known as the MIT Project, focuses on sharing intelligence and coordinating operations to intercept illegal shipments, particularly those involving sensitive materials frequently targeted by criminal networks.

Intelligence Tools to Track High‑Risk Cargo

One of the central tools in the initiative is Programa Desarma, a system designed to track, in real time, items of concern that originate in the United States. The technology issues automatic alerts whenever customs authorities detect suspicious components, helping investigators identify international trafficking routes.

The agreement also includes Remote Targeting, a capability that allows authorities to analyze cargo containers before they reach their destination, improving early detection and prevention.

Coordinated Efforts Already Showing Results

According to Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service, the exchange of information has already helped uncover sophisticated concealment methods, including attempts to hide restricted components inside recreational equipment and illicit substances disguised within everyday products.

Over the past 12 months, authorities report that more than 1,000 prohibited items shipped from the U.S. were intercepted. In addition, Brazilian officials say they seized over 1.5 tons of illegal substances in the first quarter of this year alone.

A Growing Front Against International Crime

Officials from both countries say the MIT Project represents a significant step toward modernizing border security and strengthening international cooperation. By combining data, technology, and coordinated enforcement, the initiative aims to disrupt criminal networks that operate across borders.
