An intense polar vortex sweeping down from the Arctic has plunged temperatures across two-thirds of the United States, bringing snow, ice, and dangerously cold winds to millions. States like Illinois, New York, Michigan, Ohio, and Massachusetts are facing blizzard conditions, blocked highways, and wind chills well below freezing. In Chicago, the National Weather Service issued its first winter storm warning in over 600 days.

More than 90 million Americans are under freeze alerts, stretching from Texas to the Carolinas, with temperatures dropping up to 30 degrees below seasonal averages. In northwest Indiana, snowfall has already surpassed 30 centimeters, intensified by lake-effect conditions caused by the clash between relatively warm waters and frigid polar air.

“This is a classic polar vortex event,” said meteorologist Nikki Nolan. “The cold air usually trapped near the poles has dipped into lower latitudes, creating extreme winter conditions.” Experts warn that the freezing temperatures are expected to persist through midweek, with potential for new records in several regions. The weather has also worsened delays at major airports, already strained by staffing shortages and flight cancellations linked to the ongoing government shutdown.

According to the Weather Prediction Center, “the coldest air of the season will continue through Wednesday,” while meteorologist Ben Noll adds, “this is a wake-up call for what winter may bring.”
